Today we paid a visit to my parents. The weather was magnificent, so we went for a walk to a playground. While the kids were playing, I shot them enjoying themselves, I shot my wife, the playground, some patterns, some autumn scenes and several abstract images. I also played with my kids, talked with several other parents who were there, and, in general, I had a pretty good time.
When we walked home, we passed the golden goal my dad and uncle built, and where my friends and I used to spend many an hour playing, hanging, climbing, running and whatever young boys do . We also passed the grounds of my old school (it’s been demolished a number of years ago) and my old kindergarten.
So I shot several shot which have a huge emotional value to me. I wanted these images to be rough, emotional, not sterile. The only way I figured I could achieve this was by breaking several (photographic) rules. Sharpness, noise, crispness, composition… anything that showed what I have learning over the last few years. Afterwards, there are only a few keepers, but the process in itself was very interesting – not paying too much attention to the technical part of shooting. Now let’s see if I can recall that mood another time…
After much consideration I’ve chosen one of the safer images. One that makes daddy proud each time he sees it.
