There comes time when every photographer has to shoot smoke to create a beautiful abstract image. I finally gave in as well.
I put up an A3 sized black paper background, and set the incense about 30 cm in front of the background. Next I set up a single flash at 1/4. The flash was gobood to prevent light spill on the background or in the direction of the camera. The camera was set to ISO 100, f5.6 at 1/125. Later on I learned that a higher aperture was better because a) focus becomes less important because of the larger DOF and b) most of the image will be sharp.
